Home Shifting Checklist: The Ultimate Room-by-Room Moving Guide

Om Packers Team

Why a Moving Checklist is Non-Negotiable

In the chaos of moving day, things get forgotten. Important documents left in drawers, appliances not properly disconnected, valuables mixed in with regular items, last-minute decisions about what stays and what goes — without a systematic checklist, even the most organised person can end up missing something critical.

This checklist is used by our team at Om Packers and Movers on every home shifting job. Use it to prepare your home and stay on top of the process from start to finish.

6 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • ☐ Confirm your new home address and possession date
  • ☐ Book your packers and movers — get at least 2 written quotes
  • ☐ Begin decluttering — sort items into Keep, Donate, Sell, and Discard
  • ☐ List all items requiring special handling (antiques, piano, large electronics)
  • ☐ Notify children's school about the move and arrange transfer certificates
  • ☐ Start the address change process with your bank, employer, and insurance

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • ☐ Confirm the moving date and time with your movers
  • ☐ Arrange parking space for the moving truck at both locations
  • ☐ Begin packing non-essential items: books, decor, off-season clothing
  • ☐ Gather all important documents: property papers, passports, certificates — keep these with you
  • ☐ Notify utility providers (electricity, gas, internet) about disconnection/reconnection
  • ☐ Update your address on Aadhaar, Voter ID, and driving licence (if moving cities)

Room-by-Room Packing Checklist

Kitchen

  • ☐ Use up or discard perishable food items
  • ☐ Empty, defrost, and clean the refrigerator at least 24 hours before moving day
  • ☐ Drain all water from washing machine and dishwasher
  • ☐ Wrap all glassware and ceramics individually in bubble wrap or packing paper
  • ☐ Pack sharp items (knives) in a dedicated box with clear labelling
  • ☐ Secure all liquid containers (oils, sauces) in sealed bags to prevent leaks

Master Bedroom

  • ☐ Photograph all jewellery and valuables before packing
  • ☐ Keep valuables with you — never pack them in the moving truck
  • ☐ Empty, clean, and tape all drawers of the wardrobe before moving
  • ☐ Wrap mirrors in multiple layers of bubble wrap, mark "FRAGILE"
  • ☐ Disassemble the bed frame — keep all screws and bolts in a labelled ziplock bag taped to the furniture

Living Room

  • ☐ Photograph your TV and entertainment system cable setup before disconnecting
  • ☐ Pack TV in original box if available; otherwise use anti-static bubble wrap and a TV box
  • ☐ Wrap sofa legs in bubble wrap or blankets to prevent scratches
  • ☐ Remove batteries from remotes before packing
  • ☐ Roll rugs tightly and wrap in plastic stretch film

Children's Room

  • ☐ Involve children in packing their own things — it gives them a sense of control
  • ☐ Pack favourite toys, books, and comfort items in a separate bag accessible on day one
  • ☐ Disassemble cots, study tables, and other furniture — keep hardware in labelled bags

Bathroom

  • ☐ Discard expired medications and beauty products
  • ☐ Seal all liquid items in ziplock bags before packing
  • ☐ Pack toiletries in a clear bag for easy access on day one
  • ☐ Remove shower curtains and drain all cleaning equipment

Study / Home Office

  • ☐ Back up all data on computers and external drives
  • ☐ Photograph your desk and equipment setup before dismantling
  • ☐ Pack all documents in clearly labelled folders — do not mix personal and professional papers
  • ☐ Keep backup drives and important documents with you, not in the moving truck

Moving Day Checklist

  • ☐ Be present from start to finish — do not leave the movers unsupervised
  • ☐ Do a final room-by-room walkthrough — check inside all cupboards, drawers, and storage spaces
  • ☐ Check all electrical switches, fans, and fixtures are off
  • ☐ Turn off gas and water supply
  • ☐ Take photos of the empty premises for your records
  • ☐ Confirm the inventory list with the movers and sign only after verifying
  • ☐ Collect all keys, remotes, and access cards

Post-Move Checklist (First Week)

  • ☐ Check all items against the inventory list immediately after unloading
  • ☐ Report any damage to the moving company in writing within 24 hours
  • ☐ Set up essential services first: electricity, internet, gas
  • ☐ Update your new address with postal services, subscription services, and online shopping accounts
  • ☐ Register with the local municipality if required
  • ☐ Introduce yourself to new neighbours and find out local services: grocery, medical, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I personally carry and not put in the moving truck?

Always keep the following with you: cash, jewellery, passports, property documents, insurance papers, medications, laptop, external drives, and items of significant sentimental value.

How early should I start packing for a home shift?

For a 2–3 BHK home, start packing non-essentials at least 2 weeks before the move. Begin with rooms and items you use least frequently and work towards the essentials.
